Camlock Pressure Ratings by Material Type

February 14, 2019 - "Blog"

Camlock fittings, also known as cam and groove fittings, are a type of quick hose coupling that allows for the easy connection or disconnection from pumps, tanks, equipment, and anywhere that hoses need to be frequently changed. While camlocks are typically easy to operate, it is important to understand how camlock pressure ratings can determine the success of your hose system. The pressure rating can make or break your camlock so below we have provided a chart to help you better understand camlock pressure ratings before you buy!

At Commercial Industrial Supply, we offer many different camlocks in a variety of materials and sizes. Our camlocks come in aluminum, brass, polypropylene, and stainless steel. Camlock pressure ratings differ depending on the material and size. It is important to understand the qualities of each material so that you can buy the camlock that will work most efficiently with your hose system.

Camlock Fittings Material

Aluminum camlock fittings are an economical, lightweight alternative to more expensive fittings. They excel when used for water, hydraulic oil, and petroleum products. Trash pumps, general purpose pumps, transfer pumps, IBC, and tanks work well with this material. We offer a range of sizes for aluminum camlock fittings, extending from ½” to 12”. Depending on the temperature, aluminum camlock pressure ratings vary from <50psi to ~250psi.

Stainless steel camlock fittings are known for being extremely strong and durable. They are typically used in food and sanitary fields. Stainless steel fittings tend to be more expensive than the other materials but they are highly resistant to chemicals and liquids, never looking worn down as time goes on. Like the aluminum camlocks, stainless steel camlocks range from ½” to 12”. Stainless steel has an impressive temperature range, withstanding -150 degrees Fahrenheit to +500 degrees Fahrenheit. The psi range is 100-250, depending on size.

Brass camlock fittings have a very good resistance to corrosion and damage over time, much like stainless steel. However, this material is less expensive and easier to thread. Brass camlock fittings are perfect for the marine industry due to their compatibility with water, coolants, gasolines, hydraulic oils, and petroleum products. The psi range is <50 to ~250, depending on size which ranges from ½” to 12”.

Polypropylene camlock fittings are a great alternative to metal fittings. The durability of the plastic materials can handle harsh chemicals and these fittings are very cost effective. However, polypropylene is not as strong as the metal fittings. They are commonly used in agricultural and industrial applications, as well as water and coolant applications. Sizes range from ¾” to 4” and the psi range is <50 to ~100.
