Tip #2 – The work pieces are always at the center
The development of any surface finishing solution always revolves around the work pieces. Their material, size, shape and above all, the finishing objectives, determine what type of finishing process must be selected.
The work piece size is especially important. For example, the deburring and edge radiusing of small stampings, like chain links, can take place in a small high energy machine with a capacity of less than one cu ft. On the other hand, the polishing of large wind power gears weighing up to 5 tons requires a significantly larger machine with capacities of well over 100 cu ft.
The fragility of the work pieces is another important factor. With delicate, high-value work pieces part-on-part contact must be avoided to prevent scratching or nicking. Typically these type of work pieces are mounted to a fixture that prevents any part-on-part contact during the finishing process.
The work piece shape greatly influences the media selection. Parts with complex geometries and internal passages may require completely different media shapes and sizes compared to simple forgings.
And finally, the work piece material plays a significant role. For instance, light metal parts made from aluminum or magnesium may have to be processed with less abrasive media, while hard-to- machine metals like titanium require a rather aggressive treatment.
