Selecting the Correct Powdered Metal Parts

The powdered metal trade is a very popular and demanding industry. The amount of powdered metal parts throughout the world today is enormous! However, there are some companies out there that might not be convinced that powdered metal is the right choice for them. I would like to address one of the questions that prospects have asked us on more than one occasion. “What’s the right material for me?” In order to answer that question, we need to know two things. What material are you currently using (ex. cast, wrought, molded, etc.) and what is the part’s current application and physical requirements (how it is used and what is it used for)?

Selecting the Correct Powdered Metal Parts

With a clear understanding of how the part is used and what the part is used for, makes it easier for our industry to be able to customize the right material to exactly what you need based on a number of variables. Such variables are wear resistance, hardness, tensile and transfer rupture strength, impact, ductility, corrosion resistance, magnetic response, and electrical conductivity. Powdered metal can be customized to any or all of the previously mentioned variables by blending specific properties to the raw material composition, like the ingredients it takes make a carrot cake, coffee cake, or cheese cake. Each cake requires a different raw material composition to achieve the desired finished product. Each material takes on different characteristics.

Selecting the Correct Powdered Metal Parts

With the amount of material flexibility within the powdered metal industry, the possibility exists that you will find the correct material for your application. Everyday more and more companies are making the switch to powdered metal because they see the benefits that powdered metal provides to companies like yours.
