December, 2012— Ergonomics important in school lab settings

Cumulative Trauma Disorders (CTDs) are a huge problem for the American factory

worker. Usually caused by injuries from repetitive tasks, the disorders can cause

permanent nerve damage. CTDs are responsible for 60 percent of all occupational

illnesses in America. These disorders actually start as early as elementary school.

Although some attempts have been made to increase safety and ergonomics in the

workplace, less effort has been made in the classroom. Using ergonomically-designed

equipment in schools can help reduce the number of CTD cases in students and adults.

Improving the ergonomics of chairs, screens, desks, and other school equipment can

drastically improve the health of students as they grow and develop.
