Metal Associates Providing Materials for NASA HUNCH Program

August 03, 2017 - "Press Releases"

At Metal Associates, we are focused on not only contributing to the here and now, but contributing to and investing in the future of STEM and the future of students interested in STEM in the United States. On that note, we would like to share with you about a program near and dear to our hearts, the NASA HUNCH program, for which we provide raw materials.

HUNCH stands for High School Students United with NASA to Create Hardware. This program allows curious and motivated middle and high school students to learn from NASA instructors and take college-level engineering classes in a hands-on setting. Students don’t just get theoretical instruction; they get to build certified flight hardware and soft goods that will be used by real astronauts. They receive the opportunity to figure out how to manipulate all sorts of metal materials and metal shapes used by engineers, like copper, bronze, carbon steel, brass and round wire. In essence, they get to be aerospace engineers.

We are very proud that we are able to say that, for the last three years, Metal Associates has been providing materials to HUNCH for use in its programs throughout the Northeast, including those held at County College of Morris and Lincoln Tech. Using the materials we provided, like aluminum, copper bar, copper tubes and brass plates, CCM has recently created some phenomenal products that will go a long way, both literally and figuratively, in the space programs of the world. For example, last January, HUNCH students built stowage lockers to be used on the International Space Station (ISS). These lockers don’t just contain space to hang your jacket, either. Instead, they also have space to carry Cargo Transfer Bags with some pretty impressive cargo, including a pea chamber that holds pea seeds, tubes used to help hold and support plants after harvest in space and harvest kits used to preserve plant samples. We think that’s pretty neat! Some students go on to receive NASA certifications for their hard work. Metal Associates is so honored and humbled to be able to make a difference in the lives of these bright young students. If we’re lucky, perhaps some of them will come and work for us someday.

We’d like to thank the NASA HUNCH program, as well as County College of Morris and those other individual programs to which we contribute metal materials, for giving us the opportunity to share our work with not only the world, but the universe. Your trust in us means so much, and we are so thrilled to be able to give back. Thank you!
